Masanobu Yamamoto is CTO of Miftek Corporation and Adjunct Professor of Basic Medical Sciences at Purdue University. He was one of the primary inventors involved in development of the optical disc technology especially in the mastering and physical format area from the very beginning of optical recording. In 1973 he graduated University of Tokyo with BS in Physics and joined Sony Corporation, started development of optical recording. Development of the optical disc media contributed to the release of the Laser Disc in the later 1970’s. In 1979, he joined a CD-Co-development project with Philips where he was responsible for the CD media and the physical specification. In 1989, he was placed in charge of development of new display technologies such as the DMD Projector, Field Emission Display, Head Mounted Display and Laser Scanning Display.

From 1996, he was in charge of leading development of a new recording technology based on shorter wavelength lasers and higher NA optics. This effort of his gave birth to the first Blu-ray Disc Recorder in 2003 and BD-ROM Player known as Playstation 3 (PS3) in 2006.

After completion of Blu-ray development, his team established the life science division of Sony and transformed CD presses into micro-fluidics chip creating a new high resolution, low cost technology for biosciences. In addition, his group encompassed flow cytometry in a new entity focused on the life sciences in Sony.

After retirement from Sony, he established Miftek Corporation with Purdue colleague to generate

new generation of cellular analysis technologies. With the strong background knowledge of 40 years in optoelectronics and micro fabrication for consumer application, he sees new opportunities for integration of leading edge technologies like small laser beam scanning, photon sensing and

hyperspectral detection for cellular and microparticles analysis.

The predominant publication from his work have been in the patent domain with over 210 published Patents and a number of key papers published in the public domain.

“Blue laser Optical Systems for Consumer Playback” was honored Emmy Award in 2011 and he was elected to the College of Fellows, American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering(AIMBE) in 2012.
